They are telling me that ribbon #3 is not designed to go in all the way to the white line. If it works, don't fix it dude. I think you're fine bro. I'm going to be buying another 3G which I will be ripping apart multiple times.
***Update. Phone was sent to One1 and he reported back that my iPhone is not repairable. Screen doesn't work, motherboard shorted out, I have to get a new iPhone now. I put so much work into that phone, it's crazy.
I bought a Vaja case today thinking I'd be able to fix my old iPhone. Sucks man.Last edited by gQstatus05; 01-09-2009 at 10:33 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

The bezel is metal, it has to be in the right spot or the metal will short the MOBO out. Putting the MOBO UNDER the bezel... will short it out..... Bezel goes on first, not the mobo.

THe bezel was put on first. The guy who I gave it to messed it up. The Bezel was the first thing I put back on when I was assembling it. He un assembled again to try and fix it.

I'll have my new Vaja case this week sitting all lonely on my desk until I get a new iPhone. I'm selling the iPhone on ebay with the custom MMI blue back housing because it should help make it sell.
I'm also going to sell this Sprint Mogul that I found. It's in perfect shape. It works and everything but someone probably reported it lost and they blacklisted the ESN (electronic serial $) I was tempted to go to the bank yesterday and withdraw 6 Bills to outright buy a new one at the Apple store but i'll play this one smart.
Don't be scared. When you buy the housing from casemate.com they give you an extra screen (not the lcd), buttons such as home, volume, mute, power, brackets, camera ring, headphone ring (the little chrome circles)
I'd like to thank CPRJ and One1 for helping me out man. I'll still hang around the forums until I get one. I'm going psycho. I hear my iPhone at night when I'm sleeping. Feel vibrations in my bed even though she is no longer with me. :-(
BTW if you're scared maybe you can have someone knowledable do it for you. Like I said the mistakes I made were to screw up where everything was supposed to go. (screw wise) and my friend going above and beyond the directions I told him to do thus fudging up my iPhone. All I wanted was ribbon #3 in I'd do the assembling. :-(Last edited by gQstatus05; 01-10-2009 at 06:46 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I am pretty confident I can do it, Im just gonna make sure I pay attention to detail and sort the screws out, im pretty good with taking things apart and putting them back together, jsut havent done many things this small.
WHy not just keep the blue case so when you get your new one you can swap it out and just go a little slower and pay more attention know that you know, look at this as a learning experience.
What is the site you got yours from, the casemate.com isnt opening for me.
Theres no way I could go without my iphone for that long, sometimes forget it at the house and im tripping out without it, thats partly why I want to do this my self, I couldnt stand the wait if I mailed it off.
Ive just got to decide once I get in there if I want to do the battery upgrade while its open or not since im going to get one of the 1600MAH ones.
Do you haft to glue anything when you do this? like reglue the battery back down or anything?Last edited by kjack05; 01-10-2009 at 05:43 PM.

No you don't have to reglue the battery. You can peel off the glue and place it on the new battery. I would do the battery upgrade dude. The website is case-mate.com sorry about that.
It cost me I think 40 ish for the back casing. I didn't keep it to boost up the amount of money I can sell it for. That's why I included it in the auction. I can always buy another one but this time I'm just going to send it and have someone else put it on for me. I'mn not taking a risk. Screw that.

This threads been a helpful one, but I hate it at the same time, I just looked at the battery im gonna order and it has its own peel off thing with adhesive so I dont even haft to worry about that part. I wonder with using the stock bezel if I will need glue or something or if i should just use the one it comes with.

Usually the bezel they send you is cheap plastic. The bezel that comes on your iPhone when you buy it is metal. I'd use the metal bezel. If you really want to go the extra mile you can paint the bezel with some metal paint and a couple of shots of clear coat. It would look sick. As for sticking the bezel on to the custom back housing I don't know which glue to use. I would imagine maybe krazy glue but don't quote me on that.
Just make sure you have another phone to use and take your time even it you have to be anal and look at every detail. I tried to do mines in one night and was rushing because it was my only phone. If it takes 3 days then it does.
BTW I would work on a white bedsheet or something because as I was screwing the screws one of them whizzed past me and was lost in the plush carpeting.
If you use a screwdriver with a magnet tip, would that short out the motherboard?Android user suffering from iPhone withdraw.

I always use a screwdriver with a magnetic touch

Give yourself at least 1 hour, thats how long it takes me to swap a housing

Ok just wondering if that would mess up any internals. The PC guy I took it to doesn't use magnetic tips when he's repairing his laptops and motherboards and stuff. Just wondering. Thanks CPJR

The bezel "sits" higher than the mobo....if you wanna look at it that way.....

The most important part to remember is.....if your disassembling the phone and wanna take the bezel off.....IT COMES OFF LAST.

Okay, in retrospect, that makes sense now. Thank you both. I'm not even messing with any of that yet so it shouldn't matter.
EDIT: Oh, didn't read one1's post correctly earlier about the mobo/bezel, got you broski.Respect your elders.

I know I am bumping a very ancient thread here but I did not see this fully answered. After fighting with ribbon #3 on my old 3G, I finally said "eff it" with the ribbon not quite all the way in and powered the phone up. It does work.
So the answer is that the ribbon does NOT need to be slid in all the way to the white line. All but there, but not all the way. Maybe this will help someone in the future.
