why can't we "reset all settings" in settings?
i've seen a few post saying to absolutely not reset all settings as one of the troubleshooting methods. i remember prior to 2.0 a lot of people were using that as a way to get rid of sounds problems, etc, so i'm just trying to understand why that's no longer an option? thanks

Two reasons, first this option wipes your iPhone. All settings, all mail, all sms, all music/video/pictures, everything.... and two, it takes a couple of hours to complete. It would be easier and faster, just to do a restore on iTunes.

Itunes does NOT completely erase your phone. It also does NOT erase all problems. Itunes is for quick restores for general issues. If it does not fix the problem you need to use the erase all settings method. There is not reason NOT to use that method so nobody will tell you not to use it, only that you don't actually need to unless you are having some severe problems.
The iTunes restore method simply over writes the Apple system files, and ONLY the apple system files. This means that certain things that are not apple can stay in the system. This is where you continue to have problems after a restore that you can't seem to solve. In this case it would be useful to write the phones flash memory completely with zero's and wipe it totally clean and then start over. This is when you use the erase all settings method on the iphone.
These two methods are used for different things and do different things. You can actually jailbreak a phone restored in itunes and go back in your phone to find several folders left over from previous programs. This is where problems that a restore does not fix continue to cause issues.
Just "throwing it in itunes because it is faster" won't solve your issues. People need to properly learn to operate their product.Screw #Winning, I'm #Juanning

hummm...this is getting away from what i originally asked a little. i'm only asking about the reset all settings function within the phone's setting application. i'm not asking anything related to itunes. on my 2g iphone, whenever i encounter a problem i can't figure out how to fix, i always did "reset all settings" prior to resorting to restoring and most of the time that's fixed simple issues. i suggested this fix one time post 2.0 and was told to never ever do that. after that, i've noticed a few other posts saying to never reset all settings in the phone, and that's why i'm asking. i just want to know why not. i remember pre 2.0 it never erased any of the contents on my phone

I just fully explained to you what it does and why. The entire post was focused on the question you asked, not iTunes.

well, this will probably come back to bite me but given that i can't hear his tone i gave him the benefit of the doubt and just assumed that he's being helpful and his explanation was, for both itunes and reset all resettings. plus, he really scolded you, not me so i can understand why you'd be offended. i don't care. it's unfortunate that certain people in this forum is unnecessarily rude (this is a generate statement and not targeted towards anyone). either way, thanks for both of your time for answering my question

Well if he was scolding me he's just being his normal facetious self. I don't think anywhere in my post did I suggest "throwing it into iTunes just cause its faster". In fact in all my posts, I have always said restoring is the last resort to troubleshoot a problem, not the first. But that's ok, you've probably been here long enough to know the arrogant people from the helpful ones.

Jtesnani, don't mind Eurisko. He used to be a mod and got demoted because he is a perpetual azz hat that can't conduct himself in public like everyone else. If you catch the episode of South Park "Canadia on strike" it'll explain most of the issue.

Actually half true, I was de-modded because no one on MMi is allowed to speak against Devs. That's paramount to heresy around these parts. And of course for calling someone a **** when they're a ****. Luckily, "polictical correctness" hasn't spread from the US to other parts of the world yet.
