Default iPhone identification to external devices

Hi, I am new here and searched the forums but could not realy find a solution to my problem. I bought a new BMW with iDrive that has a USB port to integrate an ipod/iphone so you can see your songs on the on screen display. When I plug in my iPhone 3G the car says "Reading..." for a few seconds then brings up a message saying "Not supported". I know for a fact that the 1st gen iPhone works on the car from reading other bmw forums. Is there something I can do to trick the car into thinking that the iPhone 3G is an iPhone 1st gen? Then maybe it will work. Is there a way to change how the phone identifies itself to external devices?

    I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks

I used my Apple cable that came with the phone. So I assume you HAVE to to use the Y-Lead for the ipod function on the phone to work with the car. I dont have one of these bmw cables, and they are very expensive to buy from the dealer. Thanks for clearing it up for me
