did you use ZiPhone to unlock and jailbreak your iphone 2g?, you can download the 1.1.4 firmware at
Apple Forums | ModMyi.com | iPhone, iPod, Mac, OS X, Mods, More - Downloads - iPhone 1.1.4 Firmware
then go to your itunes(must be lower than 8.0), my itunes is 7.5.
then connect your iphone, let itunes detect your phone then press SHIFT+RESTORE, then the browse box will appear, look for the 1.1.4 firmware that you have just downloaded then click ok, wait until the restore is complete.
then jailbreak/unlock/activate it with ZiPhone 3.0, choose the DO-IT-ALL option. then your done. 1.1.4 is by far the more stable firmware for me. not that I have anything against the 2.2 firmware but for me, I have all the mods and apps that I need in this firmware so I intend to stick to it to avoid any future problems.

Firstly you need to update iTunes to 8.x.
Use Sn0ws link above to update iTunes and then follow the steps ON THIS LINK to update to FW 2.2, and then unlock/jailbreak your phone using QuickPwn (all explained in the above link with step-by-step instructions).
2.2 is absolutely fine and gives the benefits of being able to access the App Store as well as Cydia/Installer. I doubt there are many/any Developers making Apps for 1.1.4 nowadays.

I agree, what are you thinking? 2.2 is faster than 2.0.1 and 2.1. I would recommend using QwickPwn.
Upgrade your itunes, sync your iphone so everthing is backed up. Follow these directions courtesy of iClarified. These directions are made for dummies. Any other questions, feel free to ask me.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.
