Microsoft is the only other company out there that has the ability to rival the iPhone screen. They have the MS Surface patents, which they could use for their own phone. Everyone else cannot make an equivalent screen because of all of Apple's patents. So MS needs to get on the ball. Not that it'll be better than the iPhone. But true competition would create an even better iPhone.

Microsoft's lack of determination to rival the iphone is probably due to their substantial lead in market shares.

Microsoft iPhone Killer = Epic Fail
What do you see wrong in this picture?

I came from an AT&T Tilt and I loved the phone but the constant freezes, software issues, lack of applications that kept you at the edge of the seat.. Enough Said.Android user suffering from iPhone withdraw.

actually more than microsoft i guess Nokia is the only company that still has the expertise, knowledge and man power to come up with a really good touch phone. they have started now (5800 expressmusic...not really a dream phone) but better late than never. lets see how the highly anticipated N97 (supposed to be a true iphone competitor) fares. but i guess in terms of market share worldwide (not AMERICA) Nokia leads far far ahead and they can actually bring a iphone "killer".

I won;t knock it until i try it but windows mobile has been a terrible TERRIBLE experience for me in the past. The only other Windows product that was as bad for me was Windows ME. Part of the reason is that they build the OS but don;t have much control over the phones that run it. This COULD change if they so chose, but as is has been said before, market share has a lot to do with that. Let's think about it. is Apple making iPhones because they love the human race and want to help them be happier people? hell no, they want money. MS already already has your money so the incentive for them is nearly nothing.

True but, it doesn't stop microsoft from wanting more money. Look at the new windows mobile 7. Besides apple, microsoft, to my opinion is the only other company that can use the multi-touch interface because of patent issues. Unlike other companies microsoft can and will use their own patent from their $10,000 microsoft surface table and put it on a mobile OS. I guess thats why we will never see a real iphone competitor from nokia or blackberry or any other mobile phone company unless they buy one of these two giants patents. I'm not saying that they make bad phones, im just saying that because of this issue, the iphone or the soon to be mPhone will always be different from the rest of the mobile phone industry.

Interesting pictures. Isn't that the very same touch keyboard that Microsoft laughed at, and said "serious mobile users" would never accept?

Yes, the very same. At the end of the day though I think the touch screen thing is just a fad. I don't see touch screens as being the maintsream thing, at least not permanently. If you offered functionality and beauty in a product in a compact design, people will flock towards it. The best of both worlds would be something thin that is touchscreen and buttons all in one (kind of where the G1 is going).
And as far as patents are concerned, there are always ways around them (and if not some sort of compromise). If this wasn't the case we wouldn't see as many brands of clothing, cars, electronics, or really any other product on the market today.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
