i have ssh-ed into my iphone and found out that games, preference lists, bookmarks, album artwork, playlists, firmware, notes, settings, contacts and files for running the iphone's system are all in the category "others". and sry for that first answer. LOL!
You picked a thread that is about a year old, that tells me that you searched for answers, Nice Job.
What your asking is a pretty complex question but really pretty easy once you get the basics.
Searching for your answers will be the key to learning. Also you will find a ton of vids on You Tube on how to do it.
Windows and Macs use different programs for this and it can be done with a USB connection or Wifi. Here is a Vid I found real quick, it's about doing it on old firmware but the concept is the same.
I had this the other day, before i plugged in my phone i had all my music ect on there, then plugged phone in and it came up with the 4GB "other", though well thats werid so unplugged my phone plugged it in again and it was fine, werid, very werid.
