iPhone prices

hey everyone,
I would post this in the above forum that deals with buying and selling iphones, but u need a certain amount of posts and i'm a new user.


so my questions is how much does the iphone go for? on the apple sites the 8gb is 399 and the 16gb is 499 but those are on plans. i live in canada and am wondering how much just the phone is and if its possible to get just the phone from an apple store in the US?

I can get an unlocked 8gb for $600. is that a good price or should i just make a trip to NY (about a 3 hour drive) and get one from there and do the unlocking jailbraking and activating by myself. keep in mind i'm not savy at all.
