firmware changer has not been reported compatible with 2.2 and its also not able to make your firmware higher than what it is (just saying that) why do you want customize anyways? the server is down and the project has been completely abandoned. i personally dont know how to manually change what reported firmware you have on a phone by editing anything.

yeah i know. you can change system strings manually without the need of customize. once you get back to normal on 2.2 just follow this simple guide to make a winterboard theme that does it.
Copy /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/English.lproj/SpringBoard.strings to YourTheme.theme/Bundles/com.apple.springboard/en.lproj/SpringBoard.strings
then edit the one thats in the theme folder to have the strings you want and you should be all set to go. just apply the theme in winterboardThe beatings will continue until morale improves.

solution
just enter in 'custom firmware version' the Os you had before changing it to the messed up one and enter the build you see in the wrong one. Worked for me.
