Question Buy 3G in US activate in SPAIN?

I want to buy my boyfriend an iPhone. He lives in Spain, I was wondering if I bought it from AT&T in the US and gave it to him would he be able to activate it with Movistar in Spain, at home? Or at the least in a Movistar shop in Spain?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

It would have to be unlocked. And the ONLY way to do that would be to use a sim-adapter. And if its running 2.2 FW you may have a problem doing that.

movistar is the official carrier of the iPhone in spain, so, if he got hold of a movistar sim, plugged into itunes with that sim card inside the phone will activate with no problems.

the iphone is not region locked.

Yeah, he's with Movistar in Spain. He has a Movistar sim. natch. But I'm questioning as I don't know if there's issue with buying the 3G in the US and actually activating it in Spain. I don't know if Spain offers at home activation or if there will be issues taking an iPhone into a Movistar shop and stuff and activating it. But probably not, right?

A legitimate carriers sim card should activate the phone in itunes. It works like that in the US and UK. I think its a global thing. It used to be a legitimate iPhone contract that would activate the phone, but after 2.x it changed to ANY sim card from the iphone carrying carrier.

In a nutshell, there shouldnt be a problem as the iphone is not region locked, only problem will be if movistar in spain have got some special restriction that the uk and us dont, which i highly doubt
