It is most likely a 2.1 seeing as how 2.2 came out after that date and I doubt they had any with 2.0.x

thanks for the quick answers guys! I don't actually have the phone yet so I can't check... I just hope it's not a 2.2 as I've read my chances drop significantly for a soft unlock in the near future.. thanks again

it was bought on the 1st of december, I know the 2.2 firmware came out on the 21st of november.. still hope I'm safe though.

This is just assumed by people in the forums. There really is nothing that suggests that once they get the earlier baseband unlocked that it will be any harder to unlock the one that comes with 2.2 (as far as I can tell from info. given by the dev team anyway)

i was going to start a post about this, because i bought my dad one for xmas around the 1st of december and the apple employees told me it came with the latest firmware (2.2) but it had 2.1 on it. either way, the baseband has been upgraded to a point where the dev teams unlock won't work (i think)

    THEREFORE

if anyone has got an iPhone 3g that has been pwned since 2.0.x and the baseband has not been upgraded, when the unlock comes out these phones will be allot more valuable than later versions (that is until the dev team works on the newer basebands aswell)

i have pwned mine since the beginning and am still at original 3g baseband so am going to sell it when the unlock comes out, buy a new one and make £££ in the middle for nothing. i have no need for an unlocked iphone.

i was thinking this, but they have gone out of their way to publicly announce not to stock restore to later firmwares as the baseband will be upgraded. we might have to wait a while i think before the newer basebands can be unlocked.

I am thinking they just don't want their hard work to possibly be for nothing if everyone decides to upgrade to 2.2... really there is just no way to know right now...

so it's unclear. it might be 2.1, it might be 2.0.x, but it might as well be 2.2 right?

im ALMOST sure that apple was alredy installing 2.2 on thier devices at the time of purchases here. if it is 2.2 from apple you can flash the baseband with ziphone and then go up to 2.1 again in order to help with the software unlock. i personally dont know if this method works cuz i dont have a 3g or else i would for sure try it for everyone. if anyone can confirm this method that would be great.....but im almost sure it will be coming with 2.2 on it
