It would be nice to find out that there is already 3g built into these phones. Only time will tell and for now I am pretty happy with the edge speeds that I am getting right now.

That is no excuse at all. You need to go down to an apple store and test out an iPhone because it is freaking awesome. You won't mind giving up 3g for iphone.

Wouldn't the store demo model be on the store's Wifi network and not EDGE?

No they aren't. The 3G ones say 3G on them.

Whereas the older ATT sim cards won't.

It might be that all NEW sims are now 3G... I'll know soon b/c I'm getting my wife a new phone within the next few days and it will prob not be a 3G phone but will obviously have a new sim in it.

I had an issue with activating my iPhone b/c of the type sims (32bit) in my old at&t phones (SonyEricsson T637's). The old sims and old account were not compatible with the straight account 'upgrade' that iPhone currently does. So the solution was to convert the accounts and thereby require me to upgrade my wife's phone as well containing the new type of sim card (64bit).

When this happens I'll be able to verify.
