How do I tell which firmware my iphone 3g has?

I just bought a used iphone 3g off of craigslist. I am not sure if the guy updated the firmware, so I have no idea which version is on the phone. If it has been updated, the week code will not be able to tell me.

Is there any way of telling firmware besides the date code?

There should be an entry under 'version'.

^that or you could plug it into iTunes and on the summary page of the device it will tell you which version, it will aslo ask you to download and install a newer version if yours is the old one. fyi the latest firmware version out now is 2.2
