Things to check before buying
I'm going to buy an used iphone from someone off craigslist soon. He said that everything is fine with it. What are some tests I can run with the iphone once I meet up so that I know there aren't any hardware problems with it? Or is the phone is semibricked (if that is possible)
Also I don't have a data plan, just a regular contract with rogers and was wondering wheres there setting that will turn of internet (3G) (not wifi) on the iphone so that I don't get charged for data but without turning the actually 3G that affects quality of calls.

Just turn it on and off and make sure it works. Also, open up some native apps (Safari, Mail, Notes, Stocks,...) and make sure they work.
As for turning off 3G internet, just don't use anything that uses internet when you don't have WiFi. You can also just turn off data roaming by going to Settings, General, Network.

check the ear and external speaker, also look for bad pixels and hard to see screen damage. If you can make sure it charges.

and make sure there are no dead spots
open the calculator and press all buttons
make sure the touchscreen is not defective.
you can install BossPrefs on Cydia to turn off 3G

Hmm thanks for the tips everyone, the charging one is something to check for as well. If anyone has more to contribute, feel free.
Thanks again.
I just purchased an iphone off someone from craigslist. Got it for $400 and everything was included, he even added an extension USB cord so its not a bad offer, imo. But I have another question now, for airplane mode I know that it saves battery life; unless google is wrong. I was wondering, on a full charge, would having airplane mode have just as much, or a couple hours less, battery life as it would have on a touch?Last edited by Deviatorz; 12-08-2008 at 08:29 PM. my iphone has better battery than my touch ever did. period. just be careful how many processes are running. thats all. i run winterboard and edge all day and just keep wifi off and my battery makes it all day. i even use an external bluetooth adapter taht uses the phones battery and it STILL makes it all day. battery life WAY improved with 2.2 firmware
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Wow I never thought that would happen. I guess I could run a comparison now that I got both but I wanted to hear other users first. I guess the battery life would be even longer when i have airplane mode on.
This iphone isn't jailbroken which is a drag because I got exams and won't be able to jailbreak it till mid this month (not long but I can't wait ><) but I'm happy that it's on 2.1 =). Guess it'll go to 2.2 as soon as I'm done my exams.

1. Powers on.
2. Charges.
3. LCD function (dead pixels, or just dead)
4. Digitizer function (touch every portion of the screen to make sure it responds, easiest to do by running through the springboard icons)
5. Test call.
6. Speakers (play something in Ipod)
7. Check all hard buttons.
8. Look into headphone jack and make sure the water indicator is still completely white (colored at all means water damage)
