Troubles with Winterboard and/or themes

I have just got my second 8gb 3g iphone with 2.1 firmware. First one broke. And after jail breaking it and adding my selection of themes , apps, and repos, my themes began to not work. I have tried to activated the theme through winterboard, and kate, to no avail. I can get one or two of the themes to work, but no more than that. Some individual themes dont work either, such as lockscreen wallpaper, slide, so on and so forth. On my previous iphone i remember having problems with kate, i dont remember what it was exactly. When I uninstalled kate everything was fine. How would I figure out which app could be causing this issue, or what could be causing this issue? I was hoping to steer away from removing each app up until this go back.

Oh yeah, some more questions I was reading about future unlocks with the 3g not being possible if phone was jailbroke with quickpwn, is this true? Or if you did, could you restore (or revirginize) your phone and use a different method to unlock when that time comes. And with my first iphone, was also a 8gb 3g, I was first learning this jailbreak process and like to learn through trial and error, as i have learned all of my computer knowledge, I was wondering if it is possible to restore or 'pwn' your iphone to many times, or too often.

My apologies for all of the questions, but I'm interested in learning all of this.

man kate just messes things up period. even if you uninstall it it STILL leaves a trail. as soon as i heard "kate" i knew what your issue was. my recomendation seems generic and rude but just do a full restore and rejailbreak. kate is a KILLER

all you need to do is make sure you delete all files and traces of KATE on your iphone not sure if you know how to SSH into your phone but make sure all files are gone and your phone should work perfectly..

I know a small amount about ssh, after I upgraded to 2.2 everything should be gone right? Where would I look for Kate, in the apps folder? I'm not having any more theme problems since the upgrade. And off-topic, should I have went to 2.2?
