iPhone becomes Police Scanner... Sweet.

I'll save you from the gory details of how I came up with this genius-ness but suffice it say it occurred to me that I can listen to police/fire/EMS radio broadcasts streaming on my computer. You can see where I'm going here... I download "StreamItAll" ($.99) on the app store (might be able to find other programs possibly free ones but I was excited enough that $1 was an acceptable cost. Plug in the URL from one of the scanamerica.us streams and BAM I have police radio on my iPhone. I compare it to a scanner I have and there is a 1-5 second delay (or echo when I was listening to both simultaneously.

Freaking awesome. Another reason to rock the iPhone.

Long as they don't care what I am doing, I don't care what they are doing.

Thanks Stealth, i will try and check that app out once i finally get to purchase it via appstore. I get a popup saying itunes cannot process gift cards at this time. I guess i still have a balance leftover from my last giftcard.

thanks for the advice, it's a little more expensive but worth every penny
the only problem is a battery issue , maybe suck the juice in a few hours, even with the screen off

You should read more Sun Tzu then.

Thanks for the tip on WunderRadio, I checked it out - I don't think that it's worth $6 for a slight ease of use particularly since I have a program that took 2min to program and was only a dollar but it's certainly good to know about. Great topic if I do say so myself!

You can get any m3u links you want from scanamerica.us:

1. Go to scanamerica.us
2. Click on the state your interested in (Say California)
3. Find and click on a dark blue county (one that has scanner broadcasts) (Say San Diego)
4. Right click on the link (In this case "North San Diego County Sheriff and Escondido Police") and copy link location
5. Paste it in your Browser URL bar and you have an m3u link. (For example: http://sandiego.ca.scanamerica.us/pl...1227801787.m3u )

Is that what you meant?
