Is 2.2 worth installing just yet?
Noob 's first post!! And may I say thank the almighty that I found this place. Thanks for all the expertise that abounds here.
My question is this - I'm running 2.1 on a 3G and only got it, upgraded to 2.1 and jailbroke it last week!! Having just about sorted out all my apps and themes, winterboard etc etc I was this evening about the do the 2.2 upgrade when I realised I'm not sure why I'm doing it.
I'm using the Any-networks sim and running the phone on T-Mobile (UK). Everything is working very nicely and since there seem to be some issues with 2.2 and also that the Dev team appear to be very close (a few months maybe) to finishing the software unlock, which is ultimately my preferred route in the long term, is the 2.2 upgrade worth it - in other words if it ain't broke etc etc. I'm not sure the maps update is a quantum leap since there is a Google earth app that pretty much does the same thing (how many times will we use the street view anyway?).
So is it better to leave well alone and wait for the Dev team or to take the chance and do it anyway?Last edited by finepics; 11-24-2008 at 12:47 PM. Reason: Spelling error

You can still upgrade your FW to 2.2 and not upgrade the baseband; thus, keeping your 2.1 baseband on a 2.2 FW. In order to upgrade your FW to 2.2 and not upgrade your baseband, you would need to use pawnage and create a custom firmware. Search the forum and you will find information on how to upgrade without upgrading your baseband. By not upgrading your baseband, you would leave your iPhone 3G open to the possible soft unlock in the near future.
As far as 2.2 goes, I find more reliable than 2.1. Since I upgraded, I have noticed that my 3G is a bit more responsive.

Mike - thanks for the reply. I was aware (thanks to this place) of the difference between keeping the old baseband and not. I was really more asking is if this update is worth all the hassle of sorting out apps and backing up etc for little gain in improvements. Also I read somewhere that the 2.2 update was sensitive to the SIM based unlock. Or am I completely wrong, should stop being lazy and just get on with it!!!

Stay away from Windows Quickpwn and you will be ok. Is it worth it? Not for me. I do not have any of the issues that the fixlog talks about so I am good on 2.1. The only thing that might make me upgrade is the fact that my phone has slowed down tremendously as far as loading times are concerned. The apps themselves perform flawlessly however? So I may as well update if I am going to have to repwn my phone anyways.

2.2 fixed my mail fetch problem and my SMS app loads much faster. Since I'm a text junkie this made it worth it for me.

Mike,
That's exactly what I was getting at. It could be that the Dev team will get the software code sorted before Apple bring v2.3 in which case makes a strong case for leaving well alone.
Anyone reading this have the same set-up as me ( unlock SIM and UK T-Mobile) and has had no problems?
