1.44 GB of "Other"

Can someone help me to figure what exactly this "Other" is, and how I can decrease it's size to add more space to my phone

I have the same problem: I have the iphone 3G, it had 2.1 on it and I jailbroke it. I updated to 2.2 via itunes without deleting anything on the phone. Now I have some 500MB of stuff under "other". So I decide to do a restore and it shrinks it down to 200MB. Is there any why to wipe the entire iphone? I have all my contacts saved. I just want a nice fresh 2.2 iphone 3G.
