if I buy a 3g now, will I have to worry about 2.2?

Im hoping to get a iPhone 3g soon and eventually use it on t-mobile in the future, if I goto the ATT store and sign up for one will they come with or be updated to 2.2 firmware while they activate it? Also does anyone know about how long until iPhone 3g comes with 2.2 pre-installed?

It'll take a while for manufactured phones to come with 2.2 out of the box. At this point, they'll update to 2.2 after activating for you.

What you could try is, tell them that you're in a hurry, and if setting up the phone after activation will take very long, you'll do it yourself at home.

When I purchased my iPhone, and for each of the replacements I've gotten after that, they've activated and updated my iPhone to the latest firmware. Don't assume that your store is the same as every other store. It's well known that each store's staff is very different.

Im in the middle of 3 apple stores and I pretty much goto all three and Ive never seen them update ANY phone.

They dont have the time to or any incentive to do so

Our ATT stores arent as busy and there is no Apple store near, It seems to be random, some will update during activation and some wont, seems to depend on the employee and how busy it is.

They do update and activate your phone at the AT&T stores. I got a 16gb at the beginning of this month and they wanted to update it, but they were having problems figuring it out. I asked them if I could borrow their computer to update it for them and killed the whole deal walking out of the store with 2.0 on the phone.
