1G Phone, people can't hear me
I have a 1g iphone and recently people have been saying I am sounding really muffled. I did a search and saw that people have an issue with the phone thinking headphones are plugged in. I made sure it is clean and then plugged in and out the headphones a good 10 times, no luck. People can hear me using the mic on the headphones, but using the handset (speakerphone or not) no luck. Any ideas?

First off, the headphone jack problem is completely different.
The microphone is located on the bottom of the iphone....there are little vent "holes" over the speaker.....these get clogged with dirt and dust over time.
CAREFULLY.....take a needle/pin and clean all those little holes out on the bottom of the phone. Carefully, so you dont poke through your speaker.
One side is the microphone....the other is the speaker......you'll also notice the ringer volume increases after you clean them out.

Alright, I'll give that a go. thanks for the quick response. Question though, am I trying to poke through (create holes) or clean it out (in a scooping type method)?

there too small to "scoop".
Just poke the needle back and fourth (in and out) a few times in each hole. Like I said, just dont go too deep and poke through the speaker itself.

Screw "carefully" the mic is 1/2 inch back and mounted horizontally and the speaker is equally as far back and horizontal. poke it like a cheap hooker, you aren't gonna break it.

I gave it a go, felt some resistance definately less than 1/2 inch out. Am I trying to pierce through that? Sorry bout the multiple posts but I wanna make certain before I go and mess anything up.

NO. The resistance is the speaker itself......half inch is PLENTY....the case (plastic) isnt very thick.

Well, I went through each hole a couple times and it is still not any better. I have tested using the italk app, and when I speak normally it barely registers, when I hold the phone sideways and speak loudly into the speaker it plays back as if I am whispering, but if I hold it sideways and blow into the speaker it registers that quite loudly. I don't know what that adds up to, but figured more information is more helpful than less.

probably around january or february this year i had that same problem. Unfortunately it happen at work. So i was freaking out cause it didnt work and i could go home to fix it. i called people but they couldnt hear me at all so they hungup. Even though there werent any headphones in, the phone was recognizing headphones. tried restarting but it didnt work. so i played around with it. I put the headphones in a pulled them out, nothin. then i played some music with headphones in and then pulled them out and the phone finally registered that there were no headphones plugged in. I tried callin my dad and he could hear me just fine. If your still havin this problem, try that out.

unfortunately still no luck, when I play music it plays perfectly fine through the speakers, so I don't think it thinks the headphones are in. Is there a next step I can take here?

Unfortunately I bought it from At&t with no contract (refurb) and never activated, making that not an option.

Have you tried resetting your settings? Look in Settings > General > scroll down until you see Reset.

you might have already tried this but try calling someone with the headphones in, then take em out and plug em back in a couple times and play around with the vibrate switch. Possibly try doing speakerphone?
