conflicting information regarding cancellation fee and iphone

I hear conflicting information regarding the iphone 3g contract cancellation policy on AT&T.

I bought my iphone 3g for $199 (w/ 2 year contract) back when it came out. What happens if I port my number to another carrier?

(1) I know for a fact that there will be an early termination fee of $175.
- people claim that this fee should be reduced by $5 for every month that you have had the contract. Is this correct?

(2) Do I get to keep the iphone? I hear conflicting answers to this EVERYWHERE. Some say that I have to return the iphone to apple while others assure me that the phone is mine to keep. I don't want to directly ask AT&T about this because I'm afraid that they may give me the wrong information and I will end up paying for something that according to them I shouldn't have paid for.

If you are out of your 30 day trial period then you get to keep the phone. The only time you will be charged for the phone is if you cancel your contract prior to the 30 days and don't return the phone.

how sure are you about this?

i want to cancel the contract and i'm ready to pay the fee, but i would be devestated if AT&T comes back to me and say that I have to pay $xxx for keeping the iphone.

Unless the terms have changed since September, I canceled an iPhone account then and only paid the ETF.

Yep you can sell it. Just remember to reset it to factory settings before you mail it to whomever buys it :P
