Does any one know if it would be possible to add memory to the Iphone to help compete with the new ipods.

No link, because no one has done it. There may not even be traces to support more than 8Gb on the board, but even if there were, you'd have to unsolder and then solder in new surface mounted chips, you'd be running an ultra-serious risk of destroying your phone.
Another forum I was on folks were doing this to upgrade RAM on their routers, it didn't always end well for them, and we're talking under $100 devices there with a lot more room on the boards to make mistakes. If you have experience replacing surface mount chips and don't mind losing your phone, by all means, give it a shot and let us know how it goes...

The cost to get another 8GB Mem will cost you 3x what the Iphone costs. The only way you would get a break is if you wers to buy over 15,000 units and that would still costs you alot. Not really worth the trouble. Also if my memory serves me right the Iphone memory is surface mounted which means it is soldered from the bottom of the chip not like the old chips were your solder the pins to the board. If someone could find a way to bridge the memory that might work. But the problem is finding the right memory to work at a low cost.

The actual memory wouldn't be terribly expensive, but its not easy like upgrading the drive in the iPods.Various 'Books old and new
