[HOW TO] Run X-Box Live Through iPhone 3G Connection
This guide is written using a macbook running 10.5.5 and tethering using pdaNet, connecting your xbox 360 to your macbook with an ethernet cable.
Step 1:
Setup and connect pdanet to your macbook so that your macbook is up and running online.
Step 2:
System Preferences/Sharing
Make sure internet sharing is shared from airport to ethernet.
Step 3:
On your xbox, scroll to the right on the homescreen and go to network, and setup manually.
the IP and DNS sections are seperate.
We will get the IP up and running first.
Step 4:
On your mac, open Terminal from Utilities and type "ifconfig en0" without the speechmarks, and thats the number 0 not O.
You are looking for inet, which should be 192.168.2.1
On your xbox network settings, the router is this number.the IP address section is the same first 3 sets of numbers but a higher number for the last set of the 4 and the subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0
so in my case:
IP : 192.168.2.x (x being anything greater than 1)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.2.1
If you click done and test xbox live, it should pass the IP address but fail at DNS, so...
Step 5:
System Preferences/ Network / Airport / Advanced / DNS
you want to note down this number, then go to
System Preferences / Network/ Ethernet
and enter this number into the DNS server section and click apply.
Step 6:
Now on your xbox, type in the same number into the primary and secondary settings and your done. Test xbox live connection and with any luck
At the moment, 3g connections have restricted ports from the operators, so the best NAT setting you can get is moderate, but i get strict. However, i have played GoW2, CoD4 + 5 over live in full rooms with voice chat and no lag
It's lateand im tired, hope this makes sense to you guys. Wanted to get it up as my internet went down a couple days ago and found this to be pretty reliable when needed.
This same method can also be used to share your wireless connection on your macbook (no ethernet cable from the router) and from any other 3g card.

It's laggier than straight Ethernet but is easily playable. My desktop mac with shared connection is how I get on xbox live permanently now, much cheaper than an xbox wireless card

My ethernet adapter uses EN8. I ran ifconfig en8 and got the iP address.
On XB I set for manual config and the fields are:
IP address
Subnet Mask
Gateway
What do I put in those fields? For subnet I put 255.255.255.0. For iP how do I get the IP address? You mentioned it has to be higher than 1.
For gateway I just put the 192.168.0.1 IP address. Am I missing something?

In my case the IP returned is 192.168.2.1, so the manual IP address on xbox should be
192.168.2.2
the last 2 can be any number between 2 and about 149 I think that isn't being used by another machine on your network
The subnet is 255.255.255.0
in my case the gateway is the originally returned ip address, 192.168.2.1
you also have to put the DNS in manually. They should both be the IP address of the router.

Ooo I see. I used different ranges .2, .3 I also have a lot of stuff in my place that may have been using it. I'll try it again when I get home to see if this would work. I imagine this would work amazing with a 3GS w 7.2 Mbps connection instead of my 3G.

To be honest, I haven't actually run this off my 3GS... Only my 3G.
The lag does increase between wired + wireless this way but I believe that's the case even with the xbox wireless dongle?
When my MacBook gets back from repair I might try it through my 3GS. please report if you try it first ...

max speed on att with 3gs is around 3mbits
ping is 160-300..all the way up to 4 digit pings...borderline for playable in SSF2THDR
i got it working a different way. I used the built in usb tethering. then i shared the usb connection to the ethernet. I had to use manual settings because I couldn't get the defaults to work.
this helped http://www.tuaw.com/2007/04/16/tuaw-...x-360-and-mac/
you need custom settings!!
ok so im playing my first ranked online match over 3g and it works! im winning! err I was....
HMM THIS WORKS REALLY GOOD
If I can stream netflix online with it, I'm canceling cable internet ( I need a new cable ran anyway for my 50mbit/10mbit line! )Last edited by dtp5150; 01-13-2010 at 05:53 PM.

3mbits download speed is more than enough for online gaming
Using this method you can share ANY connection (except Ethernet) to the Macs Ethernet port.
I did do it, but I've lost my results. - connect to xbox live, go to settings>general>usage and check the downloaded data amount, then play a game of CoD or Gears or something and monitor the downloaded data say every minute/5 minutes etc.
With this data you could estimate how much data gaming would take up and see how much it would impact on your bill.....

I have successfully configured iphone 3gs and iphone 4 to broadcast wireless signal to xbox 360 wireless adapter to play xbox live -- without a "strict NAT" type:
I'm on Fido. My Iphones, 3gs and iphone 4, both JB, are by default, placed behind fido's firewall/proxy. As such, any wireless transmission to xbox 360 via PDANET or MyWi will result in stick NAT type - hampering game play.
I had to do 2 essential things in order to have it work:
1) call Fido and request a public ip ($5), some people call it a "VPN package, or something to that effect.
2) I then had to configure Iphone's APN
2a) Iphone 3GS configuration:
APN: internet.fido.ca
Username: fido
Password: fido
2b) Iphone 4
APN: VPN.com - or - publicip.vpn
In order to change iphone APN, you can google, or try these
1) Iphone configuration utility:
For mac:

or
For Windows:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL926
2) Directly from your iphone:

or
help.benm.at/
NOTE: this forum has a list of other carriers APN info:

good luck, took me a solid month of research to figure this **** out, but persistence prevailed...now to work on my COD skillsLast edited by thomassays; 01-12-2011 at 05:35 PM.

Hey Thomas,
I've been researching this **** for about 3 months, and I've concluded you're right about the Public IP/APN thing for using PDAnet w/Xbox Live without a strict NAT.
I'm sure I can call up ATT and request a public IP too, but if I could pick your brain a bit by just asking what you mean when you configured the APN? Do you mean you just changed the server? I just don't know why you have have to change the APN if you're still on Fido's network--you just have a public IP address that isn't protected behind their NAT gateway,
right? (I have no idea, it just sounds logical to me)
If you could drop a comment, I, along with the other million people researching how to do this would appreciate it

Ya I'm actually not 100 % certain on that one. My thoughts were similar to yours. I figured obtaining a "public ip" would, in itself, by-pass the fido's proxy. The results did not prove this, as I still received a strict NAT type. Only after I configured the iphone APN to 'point/direct' at VPN.com (ie. Fido's non proxied server) was i able to play without a strict NAT type. So, perhaps I didnt receive a 'public ip' per se with the $5 charge, but rather the ability to access the transparent proxy of VPN.com.
Again, I'm no tech guru, just a dude trying to figure **** out. Hope this helps

I've been trying to get my pdanet full version (usb connect to my dell windows xp desktop)to connect to xbox live on my 360!! I don't have another Internet option at this time. Ive read tons of blogs on it but seems it's all for settings on Macs not windows.. I successfully have connected it during xbox live test under network. It passes the network then internet steps ( the 1st two steps) but the bar stops midway through the final internet test then a pop up says an update is required on xbox live. So I click ok, Then the bar never moves for the update????ive been pulling my hair out for a week on this ...please help .............please help.........
