2G iphone with non responsive home button?

Hi has anyone encountered this and found fix?

I have a 2G iphone that that has a home button that won't quit applications or do anything it normally does.

normally i would say that the home button must be broke.

However, I am still able to do a hard reboot (which requires holding down power and home button)

Also, i can put the phone in to DFU mode. (also requires home button.)

So I'm very puzzled. Also on most jail break attempts it reboots into restore mode. (instead of rebooting to a activated phone.)

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!
