Iphone battery hardware question
I am wondering, what are the three wires of the iPhone's battery? My guess, the red one (left) is the positive, the white one (center) is the negative... but I really don't have any freaking idea what the black wire is for!!
Is anyone working hardware things with their iphones or have an iphone repair shop, so you can tell me what are these for? I really need to know.
Thank you in advance.

red is +
black is -
white could be temperature sensor or battery type or even some data transmision connection.
This is most common in many devices not only iphone.

Time to research "lipo".
There's nothing YOU can do to figure out anything related to a Lipo battery. It's a three wire balanced system and is equal to 1/8th stick of dynamite if you let those little leads touch and it gets a nice short across the cell. Unless you have a $350 lipo conditioner and grapher, leave it alone or..........
Let's review an instance of lipo shortage........

Heheh, I know that lipo battery can explore (been reading awhile for it) but I really need to know what's the trick with the "three wire balanced system". Does that mean that you have one minus (presumably, the white wire) and two pluses which give different positive electricity (in voltage, power etc.)?
Thanx for the replies

You need a balancer to do anything with it.

Did any of you opened a simple battery li-ion or li-po?
There is a cell, could be li-ion or li-po who have two terminals, + and - from them two wires go to a small pcb,or one of them is protected with some kind of thermal fuse but this is not 100% in all cases becouse of next components from that little pcb.
On that little pcb there are some over current ptotection, most of them using one mosfet transistor.
also there could be some thermistor for determining battery temperature,or battery type or even one wire data transfer between battery and device, this is the third contact from battery.
many battery have four contacts and use them as + - thermistor (temperature sensor) and battery identification,or + - data tx rx.
About exploding battery, reason could be some defective in protection circuit,or someone allready removed,or battery is without any kind of protection in some particular case.
In many of my project I using cells li-ion recovered from defective laptop, laptop battery have this kind of protection but for all block of battery not per single one, then this cell without any protection could easy burn or explode if condition of safety is not respected.
see Lithium-ion battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
under safety chapter most o problem is from defective protection or problems in manufacturer tehnology.
for better understanding see also
