HELP pls. Suddenly lost ROOT access
Hi hope I'm posting in the correct section - newbie here.
Have successfully jailbroken 3G iPhone and installed Netatalk and OpenSSH.
Been able to log in and access files as mobile/alpine and mobile/root with a mac.
Suddenly this evening when browsing various directories, I have lost access to the root dir when logging in as both mobile and root.
I also have mobilefinder installed on my iPhone and wonder if this might have some conflict errors with permissions.
When browsing on the mac in finder, and connected, the rood dir is present as a share point, but when clicked contains zero items, although the file usage size can be displayed in 'get info' so it's not empty.
I am unable to change access permissions in 'get info' and as a result have no access.
Have reset the iPhone from within iPhone settings, still no access, just reset all my prefs and winterboards.
Any bright spark able to help? I'd REALLY appreciate it - four hours of annoyance and frustration thus far!!
If all fails should I ....a) restore via iTunes or b) re-jailbreak.
With either method, should I change my root/mobile passwds back to alpine prior to this (they've currently been changed for security)
In anticipation....

Did you try to reboot the iPhone, the mac, and even the router??
It's easier than a re-install! I'm betting on the mac! AFP gets hung up often.http://jpassoc.com/x -- with free itunes under the puppy!

I thought root access didn't work with netatalk?

Hi thanks Jake, yeah rebooted the phone, and rebooted the mac.
Have just made sure that permissions for the topmost directory in mobilefinder is 493 (775).
Will try rebooting all three as you suggest and see what happens.
@ 461am, I'm pretty sure I did have root access. certainly was able to access the root dir when logged in as mobile.
See if the reboot works.

No Jake, what are they?? Newbie as I say.
I think I am managing to SSH into it no probs, can tether and connect to the internet.
The probs I have, are that in 'get info' I get the following under permissions/access:-
(unknown) - Read and Write
Everyone - No access
and the above initial post, empty folders :-(
Rebooting all hardware did me no favours either.

cyberduck and terminal use SSH (which is probably working on the iPhone) instead of using the finder with Netatalk.
Cyberduck | FTP, SFTP, WebDAV & Amazon S3 Browser for Mac OS X.
as I said before, it's probably your mac & the AFP from netatalk!
(I use cyberduck exclusively, others use fugu)http://jpassoc.com/x -- with free itunes under the puppy!

eh, I'm lost.
I'm using the finder in safari to try and view the directories.
I have terminal on my iphone if that is of any use??
KB
Oh also, is it worth me restoring to a backup (in itunes) that I did before this problem arose?
HEY JAKE CYBERDUCK WORKS PERFECTLY THANK YOU!!
I managed to get in, I can see all my files, and I guess that's the way forward.
After many many hours though, I'm curious as to what I may have done to cause finder to screw up like that, or is it just a glitch with the AFP as you mentioned?
I wonder if I've messed up any settings in mobilefinder on the iphone with regards to access permissions etc? If so will that affect Cyberduck's access?
Is Cyberduck able to assign sharing permissions?
Moreover should I remove Netatalk and/or mobilefinder?
Thanks again

cyberduck does it all! get info on any file or directory to change permissions!
get info = command + i
And... I've been there and done that with finder! it's an incompatibility with OS X AFP & iPhone's Netatalk!!! (I stopped using it a while back)
And... You're very welcome!Last edited by jakecigar; 11-09-2008 at 11:16 PM.

All pressed sir, all pressed, and TY once again.
It's gonna bug me why they're still not showing in finder tho, even after resetting permissions in Cyberduck. Tsk!!

try uninstalling Netatalk and re-installing it... it might clean it all up! (MIGHT)

Cheers dude, it's not looking good.
Guess I'll have to wait and see if an update fixes the issue & stick with cyberduck in the interim.

Lost Root access
This is happening to me as well on a 2G iPhone, pwn'd 2.1. it started in the last couple of days, I believe. The first time I realized it was after I downloaded VoIPover3G and upgraded ORB, but it may have happened since before. Tried to remove VoIPover3G, no avail. My ftp client returns an error saying that the connection was refused--except if I login as mobile/alpine, in which case it sits there only saying "connecting" but going nowhere. Also, in Finder I get the same get info sharepoint that says Zero KB. I can access the home directory OK, however its content differs whether I log in as root/alpine or as mobile/alpine (the latter shows more items). Both logins show nothing inside the root directory.

Hi nucircle, sounds almost identical to my problem.
I can't think of any apps I may have recently installed which might be causing this problem.
Poss a modded Fring to allow 3g/Edge and iPhoneModem may be screwing it up, though I think it was fine even after these were installed.
Also, this problem has only just manifested itself on my machine too.
Have reinstalled mobilefinder, netatalk and openssh to no avail, and deleted dockprefs as this was the last app I installed just prior to the problem.
As Jakecigar mentioned, Cyberduck is a great way to gain access if you are having problems - you can change file access permissions in there, but it still does not cure the finder issue.

This one's bizarre. I tried to uninstall all apps I had installed recently, both from the app store and from Cydia. No change. I'm puzzled...

I had this problem too. Had been getting root access fine with Netatalk, and all of a sudden it stopped working. Tried reinstalling netatalk, no luck. I could still ssh in, but I could only mount /var/root in the finder through netatalk.
Eventually what seemed to clear it up for me was deleting everything thing in var/root except Library and Media. I think somehow one of the other files in there (.AppleDB .AppleDesktop .AppleDouble) was messing up the process)
So ssh to /private/var/root, make sure that if you're using a gui it shows you invisible files, and delete all the extra junk.
Then restart netatalk (either reboot, or use the netatalk bossprefs toggle from here).
Bonus tip: in terminal, type:
defaults write com.apple.desktopservices DSDontWriteNetworkStores true
so the finder won't create .dsstore files anytime you browse your iPhone.
