I use a tool called iringer, can be downloaded for free, google it, it is ad-supported but only in a small way, and not annoying. Very simple to use, import song, choose length and any effects you want (fade etc) and then hit export and it auto imports it into your itunes, easy peasy! Just don't forget then to tick the ringtones to sync them to your phone from itunes! hth

You can use this as well, FREE and already converted ring tones. All you have to do is download and import into Itunes... Enjoy

iphone ringtone maker is a paid program but pretty much idiot proof. worht the price if you are someone who changes ringtones a lot.
select your song, drag the arrows to where you want the ringtone to start and end, click send to itunes and POOF! shows up in your itunes and ready to sync to your phone.
