Can you use iPhone without the sim tray

I just picked up another iPhone today but it doesn't have a sim tray. it is possible to use the iPhone without the sim tray even though I have the sim card? It seems there something that clicks inside the phone.

You gotta have the tray, can be bought pretty cheap on the net

It is possible to wedge the sim card against the contacts with a piece of paper, but don't expect it to be dependable.
