Just had to have my son's 2G replaced under warranty by Apple for this problem. Restore to stock and return to Apple if its still under warranty. If it isnt, the part to replace is inexpensive and is part of the headphone jack, I'm sure if you are good with this sort of thing you can Google and find "how-to's" or even someone who might be willing to do this for you for less than the $200 that Apple charges for out of warranty replacements.
