Iphone hell!!!

I bought an iphone from ebay last week, when i bought it it worked it was jailbroken and unlocked but seemed very sticky and full of error, for eg, internet wouldn't connnect would lock up constantly, so i did a search on google and found a few tuts on jailbreaking and unlocking the phone myself, i have followed several tuts and have had some success in the past, but the moded files i used always seemed to be buggy, for eg, my phone would not let me dial out and it kept dropping my network, the situation i am in now is that i seem stuck on the icon on the phone screen that has a usb icon and tells me to connect to itunes, i have managed to connect to itunes but when i try to upload a custom image to my phone it will not connect and i get numerous 6xxx errors, right now my phone is unusable, the only thing i get it the usb icon on screen i have tried and I THINK successfully entered dfu mode but it will still bring up an error with itunes when it says preparing phone, i don't know what else to do as everytime i read a tut i get stuck at the preparing phone stage with itunes, i am at the moment using itunes 7.7 as that is what my last tut i read said to do, please if anyone can help please do as this is starting to drive me mad, i haven't slept in days because i can't switch off from this

if ur going to go to 2.1 update itunes and dfu restore 2wice just to be sure than jailbreak that shizz, if ur going to stick it out with 1.1.4 i think u need 7.5, not posative, same thing though dfu restore 2wice with the cntrl shift restore.. And this is the only website you will need when looking how to jailbreak/ unlock an iphone period
