    Default iPhone 3G without contract?

I dont know if this has been asked before, i tried searching around but i couldn't find anything. So this is my question, can i buy an iPhone 3G, and use it without a contract? Meaning can i just use it for everything except the cellphone and 3G? Basically, can i use it as an iPod touch? If i can't do it now, will it be possible in the near future?

well this is what im thinking, if i buy the iPod, but i need a phone later, is it not just better to get phone now and use it as an iPod, but when i need a phone i'll just sign up for a contract with my current iPhone? It would be easier like this.
