Why no mail notifications?

New iPhone owner here. I set up my IMAP Exchange email account (my own domain) and have Push turned on and Fetch set to manual. I'm not getting new email notifications on my Mail icon on the home screen, but if I have a new email and hit the Mail icon, it will then notify me and indicate 1 new mail (or however many I have). Is this due to Fetch being set to manual?

There's Status Notifier available on Cydia...works really well.
