3G - Jailbreak while Saving Applications?

I just got a 3G and was wondering, if I do a jailbreak, is there any way to save all the applications I have downloaded on my phone when new firmware is released? Or when there is new firmware and I do a jailbreak, do I always have to reinstall all my applications and themes?
