    Default Definite iPhone 3G Answer?

    Also posted this on hofo.

Alright, no matter how many times i get answers, there always seem to be another person saying its possible. So im trying one last time to get a legit answer that is real. ok.

If i buy a iphone 3g from ANOTHER person and then call att to ADD the iphone 3g plan, will they put me down for a new contract? To clarify, im buying a iphone 3g from a friend. Not unlocked, jailbroken, etc etc, not hacked, and im going to call ATT to add the iphone 3g data plan. Will they refuse to do it without making me renew my contract? After 6 years on ATT we're finally not running on contract and we want to keep it that way. So possible or not? No between answers please.

btw, what do people mean when they buy the iphone 3g already activated?

    thanks guys!

Anytime you change your service on an iPhone you renew the contract. It's a given, you are changing your service plan. You are going to a new service plan.

<--- old service plan over here ///////////// new service plan over here------>

PS- this thread belongs in the AT&T section of the forum for future reference.

No there is not... BUT if you don;t believe us you can always CALL them... you don;t need the physical phone to be in ATT personel's hands before they can change/update a plan. Just call and ask and they will tell you the same thing.

This is accurate. You can just pop an ATT sim card in the phone. HOWEVER ATT receives the IMEI and will (eventaully) automatically change your contract over/fine you (from what I have read on the forums) You may get away with it for a while, but not forever. I ahve also read that they are canning the medianet package (most likely because people are using it the with iPhone and they don't want that)

Ah, that's a little grey area that I don't think anyones explored yet. See, you could use your normal AT&T sim, but they'll send you a message saying that either you switch to an iPhone plan or they'll do it for you. Now at this point one of two things could happen.
    A) they could add the $30 package, and leave everything else as is.
    B) they make you sign a 2 year contract.
I'm thinking (A) will happen, but you never really know.

I know. I need to know 100% what happens in that gray area. Talked to the online customer service rep. She didn't know what the answer was.

Yeah they'll just stick you on an iPhone contract and if you refuse it they'll can you all together

    someone on hofo stated this

"No you will not be put in to a contract. The only requirement will be as long as you use the iPhone you use the data plan.
An already activated iPhone is what most people are selling. It is activated when they buy it from their provider. Once the 3G is activated any sim card can work from the provider that it is locked to in my case AT&T."

I never understand why people come into this forum, ask a question, get an answer, then proceed to try and convince you your answer is wrong for the next 5 hours.

ATT does not provide iphone service without the iphone plan, that's the deal. The only deal.

Pick an answer and go with it. Either one, doesn't matter..... just pick one.

I think your best bet is to just call them again until someone tells you a definite yes or no. At this point it is either what we say here, or what they say on hofo. From people's experience that have reported HERE (I never been to or know what hofo is, LOL) they do force you into a contract. I could be wrong, after all I didn't try it, but that is what people said who (claim) to have done it themselves.

whoa dude could you relax. Another person in this thread said something that contradicts your answer. You act as if your answer is 100% right. You aren't a ATT rep are you?

    @sziklassy
hmmm yeah, i'll just give att a call tomorrow I guess. Thanks!

just called. you dont need to renew it.

Let us know a couple (3-4) months down the road how the plan is working for you. If you REALLY don't need to renew it, that is pretty cool (although you are paying more that $175 premium for the phone I assume, so I don;t really see the money savings :P)

Thought it might turn out this way, and it makes sense too.
You sign up for the two year contract in exchange for a subsidized phone, if your phone isn't subsidized then there is no longer any basis behind it.

Yes and No... they make you sign a contract with 1st gen and the price of that phone is/was not subsidized at all...

to elaborate, the customer rep doubled checked and said if you purchase the phone from a friend all you need to do is to ADD the feature, not renew. this is great news, mostly cause one kept saying it wasn't possible and that i was trying to convince myself otherwise.

Cool. Hopefully it works out for you.
One1 says it's not possible because people have been sent SMS saying they need to sign for a contract even when they added the data plan (3G data). Hopefully things have changed, but we have seen many a person ask here what to do because they refused to go on a contract and now ATT is fining them out the @$$ for their iPhone plan...
