SSH question

I have a 2g phone running 1.4 . Getting ready to go to 2.1.. I read in a post that if I SSH my phone (whatever that is) I can then copy the "users/library" folder to my computer and after pwning copy it back to phone and have safari,weather addressbook and call history folders and not have to even reset the weather...
problem is, I have no clue as to even WHAT SSH is, never the less how to do it. Any help would be so appreciated.

I did this prior to doing the update. now after the update I finally got back into winSCP, I copied the library folder from my computer to the phone, it showed the progress and said 100%. I closed winSCP, went into contacts on my phone, none there, same for the calender. What did I do wrong?

You didn't hit "sync contact, bookmarks, email" in itunes before transferring the files.

Also, you don't shoot the whole library folder over, just the individual items you want.

so did I screw something up by trying to transfer all the files over and that is why I can't get into itunes? how can I fix this?
