Currently the only way a 3G iphone can be unlocked is through the simhack method. Read this.

I am not too familiar with the way it works in Canada, but I believe the only carrier it will work on without a simhack is rogers. So if you're trying any other non-rogers affiliated network, it will not work.

This isn't my area of expertise, but I believe the simcard gets stuck because until very recently, you actually had to cut your sim and attach a little chip to it, making it at times, larger than the actual area provided; thus it getting stuck.
edit: apparently it's Rogers and Fido.

because i can get a phone thats for fido cheaper than one for rogers, someone is selling one, and rogers is asking $655 for a new one.
