Try simanager ? Itll take your contacts from your phone & write to sim
then if/when you do a restore just copy them off the sim as mentioned earlier..
Just tried v2.7 & it worked flawlessly

Wyman, problem is that I no longer use iTunes. Even if I had to I would have an empty iTunes library (my current library on my computer) - which after the sync would wipe out my iPhone, right?

I think it would be easier for you to just transfer them manually over if you bought a cheap LG phone you can have your iphone running without a sim card in it and since it's stored on the phone you can put sim card into lg phone then have both running same time and then add them back manually again atleast if it's not so many contactsiPhone 4 | Version iOS 4.1 Jailbreaked

copytrans contacts to export your old iphone contacts to your computer. Once you have the contacts loaded on your computer, you can easily transfer them over to your Galaxy via the SD card.
Run the program on your PC and have your iPhone connected then select all your iphone contacts by clicking on the tick next to Contacts
Transfer over your iPhone contacts by dragging the selection to a folder on your computer
Connect your SD card and transfer the contents of the folder to your SD card.
Finally, put back your Galaxy SD card back to your new phone, and there go to your People (Contacts) app, press Menu, tap Import/Export, and complete the whole transfer process by tapping Import from SD card.
