Network identification
I use my iPhone at school for research and iProcrastinate mobile. It's really not allowed but since I'm a top student and I can't use the iPhone for anything "bad", none of the teachers care.
But the IT department isn't so generous. They can, and have recently begun, filter all internet traffic for iPhones, and identify the name of who is using one.
Now, how could they possibly find out the exact name of the person? This baffles me so much! Also, is there a way I can at least disguise my name?

Did you have to register you MAC address with the network?

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

No login, nothing? There should be no way for them to identify you then. Unless they are just picking kids ou of the crowd they see using the things...

The name of the device when you get the IP lease is the name you set to your iPhone when you set it up initallly. When you plug it into iTunes and you see "John Smith's iPhone" they can go into their network and see the device name. My iPhone has the name "BryPhone" so when I connect to a wireless network, the server giving me my IP address shows the hostname as "BryPhone"
Also, they can see the mac address of your iphone and identify it belonging to Apple and filter them that way.
