Every time you sync your Phone your contacts are backed up by iTunes. So if something has gone wrong, the only contacts you're actually going to lose are ones that you've manually added to the phone since your last successful sync. When you restore and reconnect your phone, select "Restore from Backup" and that will copy the contacts back to your phone.
Don't you also keep a list of your contacts on your Outlook or Outlook Express? This should always be used as an alternate backup.
