Default WiFi and a stupid Netgear router: maybe is MTU!

    Hi guys,
i've got an "old" AT&T iPhone w/ 2.1 QuickPwnd FW, and I've got a terrible issue.

I couldn't get Cyndia, Installer, AppStore, Itunes work wirelessy; i thinkd it was a JB's issue, but yesterday, trying other WiFi APs except my home's, i discovered that my router is the guilty one: iPhone works well.

So, my problem is related with Netgear DG834Gv3, I can't get it to work.
    The mystery is:

    -On safari:
Google works well, it does correctly searches; Wheater, Maps, Youtube.
Some sites works other doesn't showing "safari could not open the page the server has stopped responding"

    -Cydia:
    Unable to load (time out)

    -Installer:
    Timeout.

    -Appstore and itunes:
    Similar timout msgs.

    -Nemus Sync:
    Works well, syncing.

    My Wifi:
    -router-side:
DHCP with MAC booking for wifi and eth switch, no AP-secuirty protocol.
    Static DNS.
Router sees my iPhone; from my pc (connected to router) i can ping correctly 192.168.20.7 (that's my iPhone)

    -iPhone-side:
All is loaded correctly during pairing.
DNS are the same as router's, the router address is correct, subnetmask included.

I'm googling by days, but i've havent found a fix.
    I tried:
    -reset network settings
    -upgrading router's FW
-entering manually the confs, forgiving network eccetera eccetera
-putting opendns IPs in router and/or in the iphone

btw, EDGE of my carrier is working really good.
Router's AP is also always founded, and it connects w/ ease.

Please help, I'm bumping vigorously my head against teh wall.

Walk into an apple store (or any place with good wifi), see if your iPhone can use it.

then buy a new router like the airport express or try resetting your router to the factory defaults.

Old routers often don't work well.

First of all, thanks for reply.
I've tried my wifi at some buddies' home, and yes, it works perfectly.

Factory reset maybe is tha way, i haven't tried it 'coz upgrading I consider that upgrading my router's FW it's like erasing my flash and resetting with new FW (isn't working with new stable FW, why it would work with older?).
Also, my router isn't so old, it has got one year not more, standard. 802.11b/g.

    Reset is free & easy.
    Using another router is too.

Upgrades are good when all else fails.

It may not be your iPhone's fault.
    good luck!

Yes, probably. Continuous googling said me that is in particular model DG834G having troubles.

Update: tried iphone in another AP and it works amazingly well, nothing to say, it's the router.
I'll try the reset, and post a feedback, i promise.

    Thank you for support!

Tried the hard reset of the router, didn't work.

But now i remember that when i got my router i was having trouble viewing some sites. Particularly Google worked well, some sites also, but other not. And that is the exact issue i'm expriencing on the iPhone!
I searched and founded that this problem is related to MTU sizes. Changed my router's MTU setting but didn't work. I had to change it manually (editing the Win Registry key) on all my clients.

So, from now i've tried changing the router MTU in some lower sizes (now i'm on 1492 on both router and pc ethernet cards connected to it) but nothing do, still not work.
I think that i should change the MTU of network card of the iPhone, but... HOW?

I've got OpenSSH installed, and searching.
If you know any tool for advanced network settings, or this damn key for MTU please let me know!
I'm really convinced that we are near the solution.

glad you feel ,as I did, that it is your router!

Did your hard reset actually reset to factory defaults?
Is there an upgrade available for your model? what does it claim to do?

Yes, factory reset from the tiny hole behind it.
Tried and didn't work; upgraded to .37 FW and do not work.

    DG834Gv3 Support Page

Before i had .20 or something similar, 37 is a major update and as the page up is showing, is the latest, anyway if is released a .40 version.
Also, as common, problmes always do not come alone: FTP -download servers of Netgear are down from days.

Anyway...I'm pretty sure that is really the MTU size setting on the iPhone (or at least the router that is not trasmitting the correct size), if wouldn't that i shouldn't connect with Nemus Sync, Google, other sites, YouTube...

and yes, this issue is really the same i had with ethernet connected clients; i had to change that dammit setting!

is there a setting in the web interface to reset to factory defaults?

It's been a long time since I used my old netgear router!

is your ISP using some NON-STANDARD settings?

ISP is not using nothing "exotic"... but i've got issues with 1500 MTU size, scaling to 1492 is working well. Anyway, when i was getting the problem with PCs i'm saying that scaling to 1492 by router won't work; i was forced to scale it by netwrk interface settings.
It seems that that stupid white brick can't resize packets correctly.

Yes, there's the way to resect facotry settings.
I'm gonna try it, and go back online; will post a feedback whitin minutes.

Ok, update: no joy with factory reset, also, it forced me to completely reconfigure the router 'coz it didn't accept my backup -.-

Now.. i need the iphone mtu to change.

    WOOOHOOOOO

    I fixed, I fixed!

The error was pretty stupid, MTU is partially concerned, the solution is related to ADSL packets.
It was losing some packets not for size, but for wrong type...

I fixed switching from PPPoE to PPPoA!

So, my WiFi-online adventure on my iPhone is ready to start, i can now go to bed happy and victorious.

Really thank you for partecipating and support!
    Hope this helps.

    (wooooo i'm soooo happy :P )

Angry Unable to connect the network + Netgear router DG834G V3

    Hey Mate

I am encountering the same problem, this is my spec:

    Iphone 3GS
    DG834G V3 Netgear stupid Router
    Firmware: 4.0

Even if i define the wireless to be in insecure mode, it still can't connect to the wifi. However, indeed it successes in any other locations. In regards to your suggestion, i can move my router to PPPOA as it disconnect my Internet totally !!!

    Any suggestions ?

    Cheers Ori
