Default Preperations for upgrading from 1.4 to 2.1

Let me start off by telling you that I am a senior citizen that has NO computer background at all (worked in const all my life). I don't think myself stupid, but VERY uneducated in computer skills. Ok, that said, I have truly tried to find the answers to these questions but most of the instructions and tutorials are written assuming that one knows how to do more then turn the da&& phone on and off...LOL..
tutorials say to upgrade to itunes 8, I have done that, says to download quick pawn to my desktop. done that. then it says to backup my phone??? doesn't tell me how to do that, just to do it? can you help?
Is there a link somewhere that will give me all the needed info in one tutorial? I am truly so confused at this point that I think maybe I need to just stay with 1.4 and be safe. at one point in the tutorial it said to recover something using cydia, and I do not have cydia on my phone. I have tried to add it using installer but it won't load.
Any suggestions will be so appreciated. If there is someone out there that has time to spare and would like to walk an old man thru this process, oh my, now THAT would really be appreciated..

Just stick the phone on itunes and hit upgrade. It'll do the backup for you. Once it has upgraded and restored you to 2.1 and you are completely set up on 2.1 and everything is working, then quickpwn the phone and at the end it will say "setup as new phone or restore information from backup". I think you know the proper answer......

everything I have read says NOT to upgrade if my phone is already jailbroke.
Step 1) Install aptbackup from cydia and run it to backup your apps. This will make a list of all your cydia installed apps and put the list in a location that can be backed up by iTunes in step 2.

As I said, I don't have cydia on my phone and can't get it to load from installer?

Those are old instructions for going from 1.1.X to another 1.1.X.

All that doesn't matter in 2.1 none of your old apps are compatible. That was for going from 1x to another 1x firmware. 2.1 doesn't run your old apps. When you quickpwn you'll get cydia, don't use installer on the 2.1 firmware. It was awesome for 1X, but use cydia only for 2.1

ok, I have downloaded quick pwn to my desktop, so all I have to do is connect my phone to itunes, click on update, let it run, then while still in itunes, open and run quick pwn? then I will use cydia to get all my programs that are available thru it back? does this jailbreak and unlock it automatically?

FYI, you can't really brick an iPhone without physical abuse or a hardware problem. Upgrading while jailbroken is not going to do anything.

I chickened out and did not attempt it. One post says, upgrade, then turn off itunes, pwn it and then turn itunes back on.. next one says, just run it.. so I just took the cowards way out and did nothing...LOL.. thanks for your help but guess it is better to have a working 1.4 then a non working 2.1..
    thanks again

Before doing anything you should backup your contacts in Windows Address Book.

    In XP click:
    1. Start Button
    2. Accessories
    3. Windows Address Book

Create 1 fake entry in the Address Book ie Seymore Butts 1.800.555.5555 then save it and exit out of Winows Address Book and fire up iTunes.

When in iTunes with your phone connected to it:

1.Click your iPhone icon that is listed in the left window pane.
2.At the top of the screen that comes up (Summary, Info, Ringtones, Music, Photos, Videos, Podcasts, Applications) click the Info Tab.
3.Select the checkbox that says "Sync Contacts With" and make sure it says Windows Address Book Next to it. Click the little circle underneath it as well that is next to "All Contacts".

When it syncs it will pop up a warning that says something along the lines that this will change over 5% of your contacts, but be sure to allow it. Now all of your contacts wil be stored on your computer and will be accessible should you ever lose all of your contacts on your phone.

IF you do lose all of your contacts on your phone you MUST create a fake contact within your phone itself or iTunes will wipe the ones you just set up in you Windows Address Book.

Either way you go you have to have a contact either in your phone or in your WAB so that it can merge the contacts without losing any.

quickpwn. iTunes will back up your phone before restoring. You're doing a lot of extra stuff. PUT it in itunes, hit restore and upgrade......
