    Default 3G vs Edge

I have a 1st Gen iPhone with a cfw 2.1 unlocked/jailbroken/activated. Is there a difference in the receiver for Edge and 3G? I heard something about T-mobile using 3G, will it be possible to use 3G on the 1st Gen?? Because Edge really blows....and I'm NOT paying for ATT's jacked up rates for 3G

with this sort of logic there would be no reason to apple to make a new phone and call it the 3G
