1st gen iPhone stuck on 'need configuration'

my iPhone was sucking up battery today and it was at like 10%. anyhow it just did this reboot thing and was just stuck at root#_.
i putted it into recovery mode to try and figure out what to due but it only last for so long and my iPhone just turns off. only when its in recovery will my itunes read it. and it can only restore and update. i dont want to update?! so far it seems 1.1.4 and lower is the best.

HELP.SOS.

You appear to have a bad Flex Cable in your phone, but it could be software related also.

As for updating, I held out on 1X FW for months before updating to 2X, once I did I never looked back. There are SO many other hardware related (software) tools for 2X including things that will solve problems like this such as veency and other programs.

Staying on 1X is shooting yourself in the foot, and that's from a true 1X cheerleader.

Yes it's serious, try software first. If it doesn't fix it - sell it. The flex cable is only $30 or so, but you have to cut the glass away from the iPhone frame without killing the digitizer to replace the flex cable and I only do it for people if they understand ahead of time....... I'm good at it, but you have to be completely willing to lose your phone to try it. It's a hit or miss operation.

I'm posting a DIY with pics here in a few minutes so search my posts and you'll see why.

The first step before quickpwn is a full restore in iTunes to 2.1.
