unlock the phone and use a local sim, if israel is also on the gsm network with the same frequencies (1900); otherwise you'll have to pay international rates of whoever you use here and yeah that will be expensive

but if israel's providers have ridiculous rates, then there's nothing you can do

you should be able to unlock the 2g. once done, you shouldnt have any problems in Israel.... i use my Rogers Blackberry pearl there every year (prior to getting my iphone) . I bought a pay as you go Sim card with Cellcom . you just reload the card (minutes and texts are pretty cheap), but best of all all phone companies give you free incoming there....

the provider i am considering says that the phone i use with their sim card has to be 1800 mghz...would that work or it has to be 1900?

It will work. Sorry I meant to say 1800. This phone should have quadband 850/900/1800/1900. I've used it in Asia and it worked fine
