iPhone, iPhone Nano & iPhone Shuffle
Mental model of a mobile phone
Why are people not using their mobile phones as MP3 players? Because to listen to music on a phone is weird. The basic functions of mobile phones are: Telephone plus messaging plus watch. And that is our mental model of a cell phone. If you create tools with too many different functions, they loose their purpose.
Strip it down for us
The iPhone has solved many interface problems of the regular cell phone and came up with a beautiful Wii-like interaction model. Of course the tech guy loves this widgetmachine as it is.
iPhone Nano
For the iPhone Nano I suggest phone, web, mail. That’s right: no SMS, no iPod. Of course you can take pictures, notes and change the settings.
No SMS: Who cares about what technology is used? Mail is mail. Mix email with SMS and make SMS disappear. In Japan they have no SMS. Their mobile phones use email. In one word: Much easier, much better, much cheaper. No iPod: Keep it a mobile phone, keep the mental model intact.
iPhone Shuffle
Just phone, mail and time. If you turn the device you can read the mails. This little guy needs advanced speech recognition to write mails. Yeah, now we’re talking… It should also read emails to you by the way. You deal with the settings by plugging it into the USB port of your computer.
Personally, the iPhone Shuffle would suit me just fine.

Did you make this? Sweet idea... I know Apple has plans for future GSM devices, perhaps they will do something similar. If they want to really take market share, they can't compete with only having $500 and $600 phones. Us first-adopters will love 'em, but the reality is, your average Joe Cell Phone User is not gonna spend more than $100 on a phone, and would rather spend much less (with signing a contract, obviously).

Right. I'm looking forward to seeing the future of Apple's phone lineup.

I actually like the Nano idea.
Don't need to kill the battery on my phone listening to music.

its a great idea don't get me wrong, but i really don't think apple would do this. i personally would still get the iphone as opposed to the nano and shuffle. the idea of combining your music and phone and internet is a great idea. at least i think so.

I doubt that they would do it to. Perhaps they might take another look at things if sales of the full iPhone sag and produce a honed down version of the iPhone that would be like a NanoPod. But who knows - nifty concept anyways.
I think the only way that I would use the phone to listen to music is if I had bought it and there was a stereo docking station/car adapter available (which I'm sure are both right around the corner from when the iPhone is released). Then that would be cool since I could hook up to the PC, download stuff off my itunes (I use imeem.com alot) and off I go.Cheers,

yeah your right. although another interesting thing to see would be a scaled down version of the iphone with all the features. but less price and less capacity.. like maybe a 2gb edition for around $250 or so. its a long shot, and still expensive, but hey a lot more ppl might buy that one.

I hope so. Then maybe all of us can afford to atleast get one them without giving up a weeks wages.
And the kids...the kids can't afford an iPod as it is (without the parents buying it for them) and not even the Nano (again, unless ma and pa or grandparents buy) so how they ever gonna get an iPhone? And I think that teens would be a large target audience for the phone. My kids each have Nano's (the 2 younger ones just get MP3 players - the 2 older get the Nano's) which they only got because of the granparents but the iPhone...never....an iPhone Shuffle maybe...Cheers,

Lol. The oldest one got fired and the younger teen just got her SIN card - ofcourse they waited until all of the summer jobs are gone. But they have conditions on their phones: they pay. Just replaced both of their cell phones last nite (one was lost, the other the wife dropped on the road and it was run over and crushed to little pieces) and if they need to top up (both Pay As You Go) they foot the bill. So maybe they won't reach an iPhone Shuffle after all. But, I print one out and cut it out and glue to a piece of cardboard and they'll be all the rave with their friends.
Cheers,
