Why does the iPhone have 2 speakers when the MP3 plays only through ONE ???

I will admit, I thought on the first day my iPhone's right speaker was broken before realizing that was the mic. : \

On the day I bought mine, I, on the other hand, knew which one was the speaker and which was the mic.
