Anyone have problems with texts?

I am on my 3rd 3g Iphone and the first two were 16 now I am using a 8 and all of the phones seem to have the same issues of not making the noise when a text comes in. Of course I have checked the obvious like sound turned on and the ringer isn't set to vibrate. Some times it will work but most of the time it doesn't. I have tried all three firmware versions available and none of the phones were ever jailbroken. IF anyone has a clue that would be great!!!
