3 feet Kills 3G
So my coworker finally decided to get an iPhone this past May. I said 'wait until June there will be 3G'. He did. Then he didn't want to wait in line so 2 weeks ago ordered at the AT&T store a black 8GB and it came in stock last night.
Today he brings it in to show me and while taking it from the belt holster, it flips, flops, and drops to the floor. The black plastic back lands flat on the industrial berber carpet and the screen turns to a black and brown gradient mess.

Wow. Metal back FTW!

Uhh sounds like you should try to take it to the apple store and tell them it just doesnt work, Is there any visible marks on it?

It is blemish free and that is the current plan! ;o) We'll update on how it goes but I don't anticipate a problem.
Thank goodness there are no sudden drop sensors... there ARE no sudden drop sensors in them yet, right?
I posted this for:
A) irony sake,
B) to prove a point to a buddy (who shall remain nameless) that said "eh, plastic back's as good as metal" and
3) as a warning to inflict terror in the hearts of 3G'ers everywhere (at least until I get a 3G of mine own)Last edited by editwizard; 08-14-2008 at 01:12 PM.

You never know, you never know. When I tried to return my iphone, they took it to the back part of the store for about 10 minutes, who knows what they check for there. >_>

Maybe they have a spectrographic heat sensor that checks the integrity of the casing for signs of recent stress...
Or maybe they're just ducking back there to eat a sandwich.
My standard plan with returns is: always play dumb. "I didn't do anything. Yeah, and it just exploded... weird, huh?"

He's all set - the Apple Store got him taken care of with a new iPhone in about 5 mins he said.
The 3G reception issue is still there though. He's only getting 2-3 bars in our office while my original iPhone gets a solid 5 bars.

There's an even simpler solution. Don't drop cellphones.
Get "iPod & iTunes for Dummies", it'll change your life.

Thats no fun.
If you don't drop the phone then how could we know it Apple supports there customers???
Also how would we learn how the phone bounces or works after a drop?
