Itunes version - iphone 1st generation

Hello, I just got a used Iphone 4GB and wanted to see if it mattered what firmware version of Itunes is on my PC. Currrently my son uses it for his IPOD nano but I think the version is pretty old becasue he hasn't upgraded it on about a year.

Should I upgrade before trying to SYNC my new phone? The phone does have 2.0 loaded already.
