Problems Unlocking iPhone with FW 2.0 for any SIM

I have a 1st generation iPhone that I originally bought off of eBay. It came with firmware 1.1.1 and I installed a regular AT&T sim that I had from another phone. I updated the firmware to 2.0, which ended up being a mistake. iTunes now does not recognize the SIM and the iPhone only displays "emergency mode". I ran winpwn and generated a custom ipsw, ran ipwner (have iTunes ver 7.7.0.43). When I try a restore, the file starts to extract but then says that 'an unknown error occured'. iTunes shows an iPhone, but the firmware is shown as n/a. Any ideas why this is not working?

Any ideas on what to do here. My phone is useless now. I can't seem to restore to 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 either, I get the same unknown error.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and help!
