Help! IPhone charges but won't sync
Hello,
I've obtained an IPhone 4GB 1.1.1 week 39 with a strange problem.
Here are my symptoms:
Summary: It can charge but can't sync, and the home button doesn't work.
1) The home button doesn't work. This makes a hard reboot impossible.
2) My iPhone will not sync with iTunes. The computer doesn't even recognize it. (Tried multiple computers and cables, verified to be working with other IPhones)
3) The phone will boot up and get to the springboard, but if I plug in the charger it doesn't charge or recognize that it's plugged in. The phone will only boot up if it's NOT connected to the charge/sync cable. Otherwise it goes to the standard white restore mode screen. It's still not detected by the computer.
4) If I let the battery die down past the 10% left warning, it eventually shuts down and displays a red battery screen, along with icons indicating the phone needs to be plugged in. If I plug the phone in at this point, the icon changes to a lightning bolt, indicating it's charging. The phone eventually reboots and shows the restore screen. I know it's charging at this point too. If I let it sit for a few hours on this screen, the next time I boot it up I will have a pretty full battery charge. I say "pretty full" because on the Settings -> Usage screen it always says, "usage will be displayed once the battery has been fully charged"
My thought is there is a loose cable. Can anyone verify that the home button and the usb data connection travel over the same cable? I've heard mention of a data/home button connector here, so this might be what I need:

I saw in another thread (can't find it now of course) that if just the home button doesn't work, you need that part above. If the home button doesn't work, AND it has problems charging/syncing, it's just a loose cable. This is the cable I think they were refering to:

I was able to jailbreak and unlock the phone without a problem. I can't access the filesystem though, because for some reason openssh does not come up on my installer.app. I've installed Community Sources as well.
Anyone had an experience like this? Could this all just be a software problem, and if so, what do you recommend I do since I can't restore?
Would letting the battery completely discharge simulate a hard reset?
Thanks for your input...
update: I got the OpenSSH working and now have file system access...Any ideas? I tried replacing my lockdown file already without any success.Last edited by hs0j; 01-25-2008 at 05:37 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I had this same issue. I made a whole post about it earlier today with no responses. A restore fixed the issue. There might be another way, but most probably you will have to restore. If you can backup your stuff, I recommend you do so. Sorry for the bad news

So you put the phone into restore mode and it STILL didn't recognize it? Nothing you can do but go to apple I think...

(make sure you put it into DFU, look up how in the forums, there is detailed infor if you don;t know how!)

Fixed it
Well... I fixed it. Opened the thing up ->
It was the cable here:
http://www.iphonefloripa.com.br/help.htm
was loose.
Hopefully this post will serve as a guide for people with the same problem. There was very little info about this type of problem on the net....

HI dear,
I have the same problem of Hs0j in the post "1" but my home button work well.
My iphone doesn't see the charge over the usb port of my PC.
My PC doesn't see my iphone, never, in any situation. Like itune, too.
If I put my iphone on the charger, I don't see the charging but after some hour I reset it and the battery will be full.
There is someone who can help me?
Do you think I have to open the iPhone to verify some lost cable? Do you think t is a software or hardware problem?
Thanks and regards
Daniele
P.S. I have just tested, cable, charger, and my iphone on other pc....the situation is the same.

I have the same problem with an iphone of mine, anyone have any news.Pleeeeease help.
The iphone charges but doesn't display the lightning bolt.
However, my computer doesn't detect the iphone in any USB port or on a different computer. Itunes also doesn't detect it.
It is definitely the iphone because my other iphone is detected as normal.
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I have the same problem.
iPhone 3GS charges from the wall, but will not charge or sync from the computer. My iPod Nano syncs using the same cable however, so it is the iPhone 3GS and not my computer.
I thought it might be the dock assembly so I ordered a new one and replaced it, but this had no effect. I checked all the connections while I was putting it back together, but they were all clean and 'clicked' in.
So far I have found no solution.
